How professionals can benefit from semantic technologies in theory and application
December 6, 2006 - Athens, Greece
SAMT 2006 addresses the need of bringing semantics closer to multimedia analysis and understanding, thus examining how knowledge can penetrate into search and retrieval of audiovisual content. The media industry is one of the most immediate candidates to benefit from the future maturity of such technologies and their evolution into commercial applications, with the most apparent example being the area of "news".
These days we are bombarded with a plethora of multimedia information commonly referred to as "news". News about all aspects of our everyday lives are nowadays accessible to all corners of the world. But how easy is it for anyone to navigate this flood of information and how possible is it to get an objective view of controversial events, at national or international level? Our era of knowledge should provide for methods of understanding the meaning of "news". Contemporary methods should be able to organise news in a semantic way that would allow the reader to have a complete overview of all similar and conflicting views, being also able to filter information according to personal preferences and interests.
This industry day is thus organised to enable media professionals, content providers, broadcasters, professional content users, and related industrial practitioners to gain first hand experience of relevant multimedia semantic analysis technologies and associated commercial applications.
A number of presentations from internationally renowned experts in multimedia and knowledge technologies will be complemented with talks from prestigious representatives from the world of media giving an overview both from the research and commercial point of view, matching the industry needs to expected technology advances. Practical hands-on sessions will be provided both for illustrating the use of emerging technologies and for demonstrating relevant existing commercial applications.
